- 22/03/2018
Company representatives from OSK Property, Woolworths and Multiplex gathered on the site of Melbourne Square on March 22 to celebrate the official construction commencement of what is set to become Melbourne's largest mixed-use urban precinct.
The construction of the first stage was celebrated with the official turning of the sod, with special apologies sent by Victorian Planning Minister Richard Wynne for not being able to attend the historic moment.
Melbourne Square is set to be another jewel in the crown that is the Melbourne skyline. Stage one of this visionary project consists of two high-end residential towers of 54 and 69 levels designed by Cox Architecture, set amid extensive amenity.
Stage one will also play a pivotal role in bringing much-needed community amenity to Southbank, with a large public park to be added to the area, alongside Southbank's first full-line Woolworths supermarket and much more.
Tan Sri Ong Leong Huat, Executive Chairman of OSK Group, said Melbourne Square would drive the essential regeneration of the Southbank area.
"We are excited to see Melbourne Square come to life. The project will breathe life into an area that is already a coveted location within walking distance of the CBD, Southbank arts precinct, Royal Botanic Gardens and the Crown entertainment precinct. We are also delighted to be able to do our part in providing much-needed amenity to the Southbank community," he said.
Multiplex Victoria's regional managing director Graham Cotton said he was looking forward to seeing the visionary project come out of the ground.
"We're pleased to kick off the construction process on what is set to be one of Central Melbourne's most exciting new developments. It will be a busy three years ahead to bring Melbourne Square to life and we're looking forward to working closely with OSK Property in its delivery," he said.
Over 7,000 tonnes of steel and 50,000 cubic metres of concrete will be used in the first stage of construction, which is due for completion in late 2020.
